AA, AB, PB — These are bean sizes, not quality scores. AA beans are the largest, AB slightly smaller, PB (peaberry) is a single round bean that forms when only one seed develops inside the cherry instead of two. A grade tells you the size of the bean and nothing about how it tastes. We grade our lots by cupping them.
Washed — The cherry is pulped, fermented and washed before drying. It is Kenya's traditional method and it is why Kenyan coffee tastes so clean and bright.
SL28 and SL34 — Varieties selected in Kenya in the 1930s and still among the most prized in the world. SL28 is where the blackcurrant note comes from. SL34 brings more body.
Ruiru 11 and Batian — Disease-resistant varieties developed by Kenyan research institutions. They let farmers keep producing where leaf rust and berry disease would otherwise wipe out a crop.
Kenyan coffee is bright and fruity. It rewards a clean brew and a little patience. Here is how to get the best from your bag, whether or not you own equipment.
You need boiled water, a spoon, two mugs and a sieve. Ask us for a coarse grind when you order.
That is the same method professional cuppers use to taste coffee. It costs nothing and it works.
Coarse grind, like sea salt.
60g coffee per litre of water. Four minutes, then press slowly. Pour it all out straight away so it does not keep brewing.
Medium grind, like table salt.
15g coffee to 250ml water. Wet the grounds with 50ml, wait 30 seconds for the bloom, then pour the rest in slow circles. Aim to finish between 2:30 and 3:00. This is the method that shows Kenyan acidity best.
Fine-medium grind.
Fill the basket level and do not tamp. Use hot water in the base. Take it off the heat as soon as it starts to gurgle.
Fine grind.
18g in, 36g out, in 25–30 seconds. Kenyan coffee is dense, so start coarser than you think and tighten from there.
Water just off the boil, around 93–96°C. Grind just before you brew if you can. Store the bag sealed, somewhere cool and dark — not the fridge.
Most coffee you buy was roasted for a shelf. Yours is roasted on our sample roaster — a single small batch, timed to your delivery, never sitting waiting for a buyer.
Choose your size. We roast and deliver every two weeks. You save 15% on every bag, and you can pause or cancel whenever you like.
For one drinker, or for tasting your way through the collection.
For a household, or a serious daily habit.
Roots is a micro-roastery in Kikuyu, Kiambu County, Kenya.
Built from a decade in the coffee industry; brewing, roasting and sourcing coffee across different countries. We have seen the world fall for Kenyan coffee.
Priced at a premium at different destinations, with value added abroad. Roots was founded on a simple conviction: Kenyan coffee branding and value addition should happen at origin.
Through craft learned across the specialty industry, we bring art and science to modulate our roast. Roasted in small batches to iterate profiles and amplify the hard work of the producers. Each coffee bean has a character; our mission is to bring out the best from every lot we choose.
We believe a coffee company should create value beyond the cup.
Kenya exports almost all of its coffee raw. Of roughly 940,000 bags leaving the country this season, about 900,000 go as unroasted green beans, and only 30,000 as roasted coffee. That's about 95% of our exports leaving as a raw commodity, and about 3% leaving as finished coffee.
Roots exists to change that. We roast at origin, keeping more value where the coffee grows. As Kenya works toward tripling national coffee output to 150,000 metric tonnes by 2028, our work supports a stronger local coffee economy through roasting, training and value addition.
